What is a Cold Tub Used For?

Cold Tub Used

A cold tub is a large tub of water that’s been cooled to around 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) or lower. It’s used for a variety of purposes, including athletic recovery and muscle training. It’s also a useful therapy for people who suffer from cold-weather conditions like frostbite or hypothermia. In addition to the physical benefits, a cold plunge has been shown to help reduce stress and improve mood.

People have been using cold water immersion to treat injuries and for wellness purposes since ancient times. In fact, it’s the basis for many common treatments: ice application (e.g., a cold compress or ice bath); cold showers; and even whole-body cryotherapy, in which people are submerged in a chamber that blasts them with freezing air.

In the past, hot tubs were often wood-fired, and they would heat up by absorbing the fire’s heat through pipes. Today’s electric and gas-powered hot tubs are built with a shell, pump system, filters, jets, temperature control and other accessories to give users an enjoyable soak.

The shell is designed to hold the water, and it’s usually made from plastic or fiberglass. Inside the shell, you’ll find a filtration system that traps toxins and other pollutants. In some models, the pumps will incorporate a programmable setting to incorporate a small amount of chlorine or bromine into the water on a 24/7 basis to kill bacteria. The filtered water then flows to the jets through a manifold. It’s split into a series of nozzles, and some designs have an air blower that adds a light “bubbly” massage effect by adding air to the water stream through a process called the Venturi effect.

After a few minutes in the cold water, your blood vessels will expand (a process known as vasodilation), which forces your heart to work harder to pump oxygen-rich blood into the muscles and other parts of your body. This process helps reduce lactic acid build up, decreases inflammation and boosts adrenaline production, helping you recover faster from exercise or injury.

Some researchers have found that adding cold-water immersion to your workout routine can reduce Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness by accelerating the release of the body’s natural painkillers. It’s also been shown to help prevent sore muscles from recurring.

While you can take a cold dip in your bathtub, companies like Polar Monkeys are designing cold-water immersion tanks to use indoors or outdoors. They’re available in a range of sizes to suit your space and budget, and you can also rent one for an event. For the most comfortable experience, it’s best to have a partner to help you get in and out of the Cold Tub safely, especially if you’re new to this type of treatment. Once you’re in, aim to stay in the tub for 5 to 10 minutes, or less if it feels uncomfortable. Then, carefully exit the tub and dry off your body before changing into warm clothes.

A cold tub, also known as a cold plunge or ice bath, is a popular therapeutic technique that involves immersing the body in cold water for a set period of time. This practice has been used for centuries in various cultures and is now commonly embraced by athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and wellness advocates. The purpose of the cold tub is to promote recovery, reduce muscle soreness, and enhance overall health through the physiological responses triggered by cold exposure.
